Religious Education

With the framework provided by the Sharing Our Story syllabus, the school-based curriculum aims to ensure Religious Education programs are faithful to Church teaching and responsive to student needs in developing their knowledge, skills, values and attitudes.

Through the reflection of life experience and the examination of scripture and the doctrine of the Catholic Church, it is expected that the children will grow in their knowledge and understanding of their faith.

Religious Education & Pastoral Programs

The school follows the Parramatta Diocesan curriculum, Sharing Our Story. Through staff development activities, staff have been encouraged to incorporate cooperative learning practices and rich learning tasks into the teaching strategies of units being developed. Assessment in Religious Education (RE) is a key area of development. Members of staff were in-serviced in 'Godly Play' as a way of teaching scripture to the students. Programs follow the shared Christian praxis approach and are highly experiential.

We promote the work of the Church through the provision of liturgical experiences drawn from our Catholic traditions. Daily prayer is a regular part of the day at St Joseph’s.

Once each month, our school choir sings at the 10am Sunday Mass. Choir practice is held weekly after school. Each term St Joseph’s joins with students from other schools in the parish for an All Schools’ Mass.

Our policies and procedures for student wellbeing are based on the Positive Behaviour School framework putting the focus on student learning.

Expectations are articulated in our STaRS:

  • Safe
  • Thoughtful
  • actively
  • Responsible
  • Students

Expectations are explicitly taught to all students and individual plans are developed for students requiring more intensive support. All staff support students in living out the STaRS values.

As educators:

  • We teach and model the message of Jesus presented in the traditions and teachings of the Catholic Church.

  • We promote a love of Christ, self and others. As a school community, we look to the examples of Saint Joseph and Blessed Mary MacKillop.

  • We provide opportunities for each child to reflect on Gospel values, be challenged by them and live them in their daily lives.

  • We promote the need for ongoing spiritual formation for all.

  • We recognise that all children learn differently and that they have preferred learning styles.  We therefore implement integral learning strategies and other related educational theories.

  • We encompass professional teaching which ensures a broad and balanced curriculum.

Faith Development

St Joseph’s School works in partnership with the home and Parish to support the faith development of the children.

A Sacramental preparation is facilitated by the Parish and is supported by the school. If your child is preparing to receive a Sacrament, please inform the teacher so further support can be provided.

Children and parents are encouraged to attend the Children’s Mass held every Wednesday at 9:00am. Parents are invited to participate in class and school celebrations throughout the year.

Sacramental Programs

Parents wishing to present their children for the sacraments of Eucharist, Reconciliation or Confirmation should contact the Parish Sacramental Coordinator, as programs are run through the parish and not the school.

Parents wishing to present their school-aged children must contact the RCIC Coordinator at the Parish. All Parish contact details are listed in this booklet under “St Joseph’s Catholic Church”.

All Schools Mass

Each term, St Joseph’s joins with Catholic children from state schools in a celebration Mass. Details are listed in the school newsletter before the celebration.

School Choir

There is a school choir which sings at 10:00am Mass every 4th Sunday of the month. All children are welcome to participate. If a child wishes to participate in this activity, details can be obtained from the school office.
